Who doesn’t have a guilty pleasure? We’ve all got them, right? No matter how much you deny it, I bet there is something that you know you shouldn’t eat but you cannot help yourself. Or, there is something that you know is not the best, yet it gives you so much satisfaction deep in your belly!
I have quite a few if I’m honest. Most stem from my uni days! But, there are many things that I ate when I was growing up too! You don’t want to be eating them every day, but when you do you are like the cat that got the cream!
I used to feel pretty guilty about some of these things and beat myself up. These days I accept that I will fall of the wagon from time to time and enjoy it! – Life is no fun if you stick to the plan every day!
As I was coming out of my covid haze I was so hungry, I didn’t know what to eat for the best. All I wanted was donuts, pizza and kebabs. But, the health freak in me was saying no, I’ll only regret it (and so was Jemma, my wife). In the end I settled for something that I had not had for years! I was so pleased with the choice that I had to tell you about it and share the love! I threw a few extra bits in to make it super yummy and thought I’d share the recipe with you! Back in the day it was a bit of a carb fest sandwiched between 2 slices of bread. But, once I totted up my pimped up version, I don’t think that it was all that bad!
Before I come on to this though, I thought I’d share a few of my old school guilty pleasures.
Kebabs
So, I’d say top of my list is a kebab… a Donner kebab at that! You cannot beat it after a night out. The salty spicy meat (which you are not quite what it is) always tasted so good! Back in the day I was able to get them in a naan bread, but, no such luck where I live these days. But, the chip shop near me (The Alrewas Fryer) does them and they are pretty good. Nowadays they are a guilty pleasure because I can happily troff one down for dinner… no beer needed!
Findus crispy pancakes
Minced beef flavour all they way (or horse – who knows?).
The centre of a meaty scandal a few years a go (just in case you dont know about it, click here), I have very fond memories of these as I was growing up. We used to have ‘oven’ food on a Friday and these were a firm favourite… I’m not sure what the coating was but the ‘beef’ filling was always mega tasty. They came in a pack of 6 and I’m sure I could have eaten them all. There was also a chicken and sweetcorn flavoured ones but never quite as good!
Point to note: I think these are now Birds Eye’s rather than Findus
Pork Scratchings
Love love love!! Oink oink! I cannot resist these tasty morsels, but you cannot eat too many of them for obvious reasons! Pork scratching have gone through somewhat of a revolution over the last few years. They became quite fashionable with loads of different flavours and spin offs. You can’t beat the traditional scratchings though! I go for the ones in sea salt these days as I am done with MSG (e621) – super salt. Although super tasty, not good for the old blood pressure!
What was my guilty pleasure?
Super noodles!
I had a craving for these at the end of my covid haze… Mum and Dad used buy a big box of these from a Chinese super market (wing YIP Link). The Chinese ones were generally ramen soup noodle. They were brilliant as a quick snack. We’d often add in sausages and sweetcorn or eggs to bulk it out.. Unfortunately, Jemma couldnt pop to the Chinese supermarket so she had to settle for a trip to the Co-Op.
There is a lot more liquid in the ramen than the supernoodles. But, the way that I cooked them this time around, the consistency was spot on. If you follow the instructions on the packet you are in danger of getting a soggy mess. But, It will still taste good, especially sandwiched between 2 slices of white bread!
Pimped up Super Noodles!
So here is my recipe for a quick and easy super noodle dish toped with a fried egg.. it took 5-10 mins from start to finish, mega tasty and super speedy, all for around 500 calories too!
Ingredients
- 1 packet of Super noodles (any flavour but i used chicken for this recipe)
- 1 fried egg (runny yolk)
- 80g Sweetcorn
Method
- Empty packet of super noodles into the pan
- Add 300 ml boiling water and the seasoning packet and give it a good stir
- Add in sweet corn
- Simmer for 4 minutes or so. The packet say to simmer for 4 minutes or until the liquid is absorbed. But, its important here not to boil too fast. For this recipe you don’t want all the liquid to boil away otherwise you’ll be reaching for that sliced bread!
- While simmering away fry an egg and leave the yolk runny. Season with a little salt and pepper
- Once the noodles are done, take them off the heat, tip into a bowl and top with your fried egg
I’d add some sweet chilli sauce or sriracha for added punch!
Healthy (ish) and yummy! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
