Chasing Victory: Training Update for La Marmotte Challenge

In just about eight weeks, I’ll be toeing the line at La Marmotte (https://marmottegranfondoalpes.com/en/), a race that promises to test every ounce of my cycling abilities. But this time, I’m not just going to ride a route; I’m going with the intention of winning. The journey to this point has been eye-opening, tiring, and exhilarating as I pursue the crazy challenge I’ve set myself. It’s been a little while since I first posted about this (check out the start of my journey here) so here’s a bit of a training update on my journey!

The Unforeseen Twist

The road to La Marmotte took an unexpected detour when the Ultra Fondo, a beast of a challenge spanning over 200km with a staggering 6000m of elevation gain, was unexpectedly cancelled post my entry. Gutted. But rather than succumbing to disappointment, I saw it as a chance to aim higher, setting my sights on victory at La Marmotte. Is it possible? No idea!

Expert Guidance and Personalised Training

Recognising the need for a strategic approach, I sought the expertise of a coach (https://bodyperformancemethod.com) Despite years spent honing my fitness with TrainerRoad sessions, I craved the personal touch, the nuanced guidance that only a human coach could provide. Armed with an initial FTP of around 275w, I knew that to elevate my game, I needed tailored training and expert advice.

Current Progress: 8 Weeks Out

Mindset:

My resolve remains unshakable, though the journey to date has had its share of ups and downs. There have been days when motivation waned, when fatigue threatened to derail my progress. A recent setback during a family break, where my trusty turbo trainer broke, forced an unexpected break from training. Yet, in hindsight, it may have been a blessing in disguise, affording me a much-needed period of rest and rejuvenation. Not to mention even more dedicated time with my family.

Training:

Each week is a dynamic blend of cycling sessions and strength training under the watchful eye of Loz, my coach (https://bodyperformancemethod.com) An example week is below. From intense interval rides lasting just an hour to grueling endurance sessions stretching up to four, every pedal stroke is a step closer to my goal. Lately, I’ve found renewed joy in the saddle, consistently hitting power targets and feeling stronger and more confident than ever before.

Strength and Conditioning:

The gym sessions have been revelatory, awakening long-forgotten muscles and fostering a newfound sense of balance and stability. By focusing on core strength and upper body conditioning, I’m laying the groundwork for more efficient power transfer on the bike, ensuring every ounce of effort translates into forward momentum.

Performance Metrics:

While my last FTP test revealed a slight dip to 266w, it’s a more accurate reflection of my capabilities. With controlled intervals and improved consistency, I’m witnessing significant gains in performance. Just the other day, maintaining 203w for a steady two-hour ride felt effortless, a testament to the progress made in recent weeks.

Nutrition:

In my quest for peak performance, nutrition plays a pivotal role. Adopting a lower-fat diet has been key, as has been the pursuit of a strategic calorie deficit to shed excess weight without compromising essential nutrition. While the journey to my target weight is proving tougher than expected, I remain committed, knowing that every dietary choice brings me one step closer.

Looking Ahead

With a test week looming on the horizon, I’m oddly excited. Despite the grueling nature of FTP tests, there’s a certain allure in pushing myself to the limit, in unlocking new levels of performance and resilience.

The event is closing in fast and I’ll have to double down over the next few weeks to get the most out of my training

One thing I will take away from this process is that as the countdown to La Marmotte continues, each day brings with it new challenges, and new opportunities for growth, both on and off the bike.
